CONNECT: How can recognising your fallenness help you to trust in God more?

WARM-UP

  1. Have you ever had the experience of being saved from something?
  2. When it comes to the death and resurrection of Jesus, why is it important to look at the old testament background? How does it impact our view of Jesus?

READ Exodus 12:1-13

  1. What has happened in the bible up to this point? How did the Israelites end up becoming a nation but in slavery in Egypt?
  2. How do we see both God’s justice and mercy in this passage?
  3. Why did the lamb have to be slaughtered? What did it accomplish?
  4. Read vv24-27. What was the role of the celebration of the Passover meal for future generations?

READ Mark 14:12-21

  1. Jesus has given some very specific instructions to his disciples. Why is this so? What does this indicate about the nature of what is about to happen?
  2. How may have you reacted if you were in that room and heard Jesus say that one of them was going to betray him? What was so shocking about it?
  3. What is Jesus’ response to both the reaction and eventual betrayal?
  4. What was written about the Son of Man? Read Isaiah 53:1-6. What kind of king and servant was he going to be?

READ Mark 14:22-25

  1. What was so different about this Passover meal? What does Jesus make it all about?
  2. How are we redeemed and what are we redeemed from?
  3. What views of the Lord’s Supper have you come across? What does the bread represent here? What does the wine represent here?
  4. How can we make sure that our reception of the Lord’s Supper isn’t merely ritualistic but a wholehearted participation?
  5. What type of covenant does Jesus’ death secure? What type of hope does his resurrection give us?
  6. How does the redemption won by Jesus impact our lives now and also into the future?

APPLY: How can we ensure we never forget the reality of our redemption?

Prayer
Gracious God, you don’t desire that we should perish but that all should turn to Christ and live. Thank you that you have made a way for us to be redeemed. Grant that we may constantly see your goodness and mercy, and be renewed by it day by day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
