Questions and going deeper resources

Small group questions

Connect How can you keep before you the good news that Jesus Christ was crucified?

Warm-Up

  1. Do you remember the first gift that you ever received? Do you remember the first money you earned?
  2. What is the difference between a gift and a wage? Which is God’s grace more like?
  3. What type of Gospel ‘plus’ was being preached by some to the Galatians? How did it involve the Law?

Read Galatians 3:15-18

  1. How rigid are wills today? How rigid were wills in the Greco-Roman world at the time Paul wrote?
  2. What was the promise/covenant that was made to Abraham? How was that promise sealed?
  3. What is the significance of this promise, how it was made, and who made it?
  4. Why are God’s promises rock solid? Have you known this to be true?
  5. Which came first: God’s promise to Abraham or the Law? Why is this important to recognise?
  6. How was it ‘faulty logic’ to think that the Law 'superseded’ the promise? Why is it so important to understand the relationship between the Gospel and the Law? Does God still expect obedience?
  7. Who is the ‘Seed’? How is God’s promise fulfilled in Jesus? What difference does that make to you?
  8. What is the inheritance that Christians can both know and look forward to?

Read Galatians 3:19-22

  1. If the Law was given not to save us, what was the point of it? How does it show us that we need a Saviour?
  2. In what way is the whole world a prisoner to sin? How does the Law reveal that to us?
  3. How do you think most people respond to the claim that every person is a sinner? Why is it foolish to try to deny or be indifferent to the problem of sin? Is it a delusion to think we can solve it on our own?
  4. Why does Christianity have an altogether different approach? How have you known that in your life?
  5. How does the Gospel show us that salvation depends on God’s promise not our performance?
  6. How are we free to obediently follow Jesus without any fear of condemnation?
  7. Are there any times that you are tempted to rely on your performance rather than God’s grace?

Read Galatians 3:23–29

  1. When you become a Christian, what change is there between who you were and who you are now?
  2. If we have become children of God, whose inheritance do we receive through Jesus?
  3. Who is the Gospel open to? How should this shape how we proclaim the good news and relate to others?

Apply What is one implication this week of knowing that you are a child of God through faith in Christ?

Prayer
Gracious Father, thank you that you are faithful to your promises and that’s through our connection to Jesus that we have become your children and assured of a great inheritance. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
