Questions and going deeper resources

Small group questions

Connect What is one way that would help you to walk more closely—keeping in step—with the Spirit?

Warm-Up

  1. If you have ever moved town, how have you found making friends? Has being part of a church helped?
  2. How is being a ‘people’ a fundamental part of being a Christian?

Read Galatians 6:1-2

  1. What do you think our culture thinks of being ‘conceited’? If conceited—in this context—means looking out for our own interests, how does our culture affirm that?
  2. What are the “acts of the flesh” that Paul had listed in chapter 5? Was this an exhaustive list?
  3. What does Paul say that we are to do for those who are ‘caught in a sin’? What are you tempted to do?
  4. Does this mean we should take up the role of criticising people? Does it include absolutely any sin?
  5. What goal does Paul have in mind? What do you think it means to approach it gently?
  6. What is the law of Christ? If approaching the restoration of someone in this way, how do you think this is actually a loving way of carrying one another’s burdens?
  7. If we can’t do this lovingly and with humility, should we seek to do it at all?

Read Galatians 6:3-5

  1. What is humility? How does it correct both thinking too little or too much of ourselves?
  2. Why do you think humility is so highly prized by God? What is the cause for us to be humble?
  3. Why do you think humility is so critical in our relationships? Can you think of an example when you have been blessed by someone’s humility towards you?
  4. How can comparison kill humility ? How can it lead us to thinking that we are worthless (i.e., have nothing to offer) or that others are unworthy (i.e., that they don’t deserve what we have to offer)?
  5. What helps you to grow in humility? How can offering help and receiving help grow our humility?

Read Galatians 6:6-10

  1. What is Paul’s point about reaping and sowing? Is this a form of the prosperity gospel?
  2. How do you think you are ‘sowing to please the Spirit’ in your life?
  3. What does Paul say that we should do? How is ‘opportunity’ the intersection of what God has given us and the context where he has placed us? What therefore is the opportunity that you have?
  4. Do you ever feel tired of ‘doing good’? What helps you to not give up?

Apply What is an opportunity for something good that you could do for a brother or sister in Christ this week?

Prayer
Gracious Father, thank you that as we put our trust in your Son that you have also made us a people — your people. Please help us in the power of your Spirit, to care for others, cultivate humility, and contribute generously according to the opportunities that you have provided. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
