Connect: How do you keep ‘feeding on Jesus’ every day as you seek to live for him?

Warm-Up

  1. What is the worst condition you’ve ever experienced on a boat? 

Read John 6:16-19 

  1. What has happened this day already? (Hint read John 6:1-14)
  2. Read verse 15. Why is Jesus withdrawing from the crowds? Where do the disciples go?
  3. What are the conditions like on the water? What experience do the disciples have in handling this? How do the disciples react to the storm?
  4. What would worry you most about this situation? 
  5. What are the disciples frightened of? Why would they be more frightened of Jesus than the storm?
  6. Do you ever find Jesus frightening? Do you ever find God frightening? When are you more likely to be apprehensive or afraid of God?
  7. How does Jesus walking on water point to his identity as God? What important events does it echo?
  8. How should we respond to God’s holiness?

Read John 6:20-21

  1. In response to their fear, what does Jesus tell the disciples? 
  2. How do you normally feel when someone tells you to not be afraid? 
  3. Why is their fear a right reaction to who Jesus is? 
  4. Read Genesis 15:1, Genesis 26:24, and Isaiah 41:10. What is the reason given to not be afraid?
  5. Have you ever felt distant or far from God? Why don’t we need to be afraid in Jesus’ presence? 
  6. How is it possible we can be in God’s presence? How does God overcome the gap between our lives and his holiness?
  7. What does Jesus’ statement ‘It is I’ echo? How does it reveal who Jesus is?
  8. How do the disciples respond to Jesus? How can we respond like the disciples? 
  9. What might get in the way of responding like the disciples?
  10. What happens immediately after the disciples welcome Jesus? 
  11. How can Jesus walking on water, give us confidence of God’s presence with us?

Apply What reminds you each day that Jesus is with you and wants to be with you?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for drawing close to us in Jesus. Please Lord, help us not to be deluded to think we can manage our sin and brokenness on our own, but help us believe in Jesus, be ready to welcome him with joy, and find peace in his presence. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
