Connect What are three ways you can proclaim the gospel on your frontlines? 

Warm-Up

  1. What are some examples of people saying one thing but acting differently?
  2. How do you feel generally when people’s ‘actions speak louder than their words’? How can this be good? When is this not so good?
  3. What is the danger for leaders when their actions speak louder than their words?

Read Galatians 2:11-18

  1. What was Peter doing before the men from James came? What was Peter doing afterwards? 
  2. Why did it matter who Peter ate with? What was the significance of eating together? 
  3. How did God make it clear that Gentiles were to be fully accepted? (Hint: Read Acts 10-11). 
  4. What set of beliefs was Peter implying, by now separating himself from the Gentiles? 
  5. What motivated Peter to change his practices? 
  6. Who are the ‘circumcision group’ and what did they promote?
  7. How can who we fear or seek approval from change our actions? Have you ever witnessed this? Have you ever experienced this?
  8. How can we guard against living out of line with the truth of the gospel?
  9. In verse 15, who are some of the Jews by birth (Jewish Christians) mentioned in this passage?
  10. What does Paul mean by “sinful Gentiles”? What are the differences between Jews and Gentiles?
  11. How is a person justified? What does ‘justification’ mean? 
  12. How do you know that you are justified? What difference has that made in your life?

Read Galatians 2:19-21

  1. If you asked a friend, what does “living for God” mean, what would they say? 
  2. Who are we to live for? In what specific ways is our life bound together with Christ?
  3. How is living for God not simply following a set of regulations? How is it more demanding but also more freeing? How should we relate to God’s commands and things God says to do and not do? 
  4. What difference does it (or should it make) if Christ lives in you? 
  5. Are there any places you go, that you tend to forget Jesus goes with you? What practices or rhythms will help you to remember? 
  6. Share two places you will spend time this week. What will it look like to live by faith in Christ?

Apply Try memorising Galatians 2:20 (or start by writing it down somewhere you will see it each day).

Prayer
Gracious Father, thank you for the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Please help us to grasp it by faith, and by the power of your Spirit, shape our lives in line with its truth. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
